With only 70 or so Spitfires still flying in the world today from an original 22,000, incredibly these two highly original aeroplanes, MH434 and MH415, came off the Supermarine production line at Castle Bromwich (now the Jaguar car plant) in the same week in August 1943.

They then joined the same RAF Squadron, went into battle together, and post war had a uniquely twinned history through service with both the Dutch and Belgians before ultimately parting company after participating in the 1969 film ‘The Battle Of Britain’.

At that point MH434 was sold to Sir Adrian Swire and ultimately into the care of the former Red Arrows leader, Ray Hanna while MH415 went to Connie Edwards in Texas. Having parted company they were not seen with each other again until post MH 415’s recent restoration in Australia, when it then returned to England last year.

They will be flying together again at Heveningham Hall (one of only two such opportunities this year) over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd  July.

Thunderdrome is a new event for Heveningham Concours having been tested in Summer 2020. It is essentially an oval flat-track around a central bowl. Two cars will race each other having lined up on opposite sides of the track. The race is complete once one competitor catches the other. This all sounds fairly straightforward until you you imagine the levels of dust that get kicked up from a raging Ferrari F40 screaming sideways through the dirt.

Within their area, as well as combat displays, there is also medieval living history with tents, cooking and even the occasional medieval game or musical instrument being played. There will be opportunities to talk to squires as they arm the knights for the tournament and to archers about the awesome power of the English longbow before each combat display performance, which includes exciting elimination duels, thrilling team matches and chaotic Grand Melees.
